Alston Moor Red Squirrels

Alston Moor Red Squirrels

Alston Moor Red Squirrel Group are a community group who aim to conserve and protect the Moor's population of the native red squirrel. Volunteer led, the group looks to monitor the reds through the provision of sightings (of both red and grey squirrels) from the local community.

The red squirrel is present in many of the woodlands throughout the moor but it is under threat, with numbers in England thought to be as low as 15,000, with the majority of those in Cumbria and Northumberland, so it is vital that we monitor and maintain the population present in Alston.

We believe that red squirrel conservation is predominantly about grey squirrel control and will continue to until an alternative strategy is identified. As a volunteer group we rely on sightings to enable us to monitor populations and react quickly to grey sightings.  It is with the control of greys that reds will continue to thrive.

If you wish to volunteer to work with us to control greys please do get in touch on 07542 700930, email: info@alstonredsquirrels.co.uk.  Guidance and training will be provided.
